The UN Human Rights Council's 37th session is taking place in Geneva. APC has participated with a diversity of statements (see Content regulation in the digital age, Written statement on internet freedoms of Palestinians, States must provide comprehensive protections for secure communications and Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy) and sessions on internet rights, including “Digital identity, smart cities, and other data intensive systems: The implications for the right to privacy”, a session co-organised with Privacy International.
The panel, which included representatives from permanent missions to the United Nations such as Brazil, Germany and Austria, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy Joseph Cannataci, raised issues on data intensive systems and the need to make them compliant with international standards on data protection. Jamael Jacob, a lawyer specialising in ICT and human rights and legal advisor to APC member Foundation for Media Alternatives, shared the highlights of the event in this article published on GMA News Online.
