Proceso de Comunidades Negras (Black Communities Process – PCN) defines itself as a “Black organisational dynamic” that encompasses more than 140 grassroots organisations, community groups and individuals who work towards the transformation of the political, social, economic and territorial reality of Black, Afrodescendent, Raizal and Palenquera communities by defending and demanding recognition for their individual, collective and ancestral rights. (Raizal refers to inhabitants of the islands off the Caribbean coast of Colombia, while Palenquera communities are made up by the descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped and founded their own settlements).
The PCN was founded in 1993 and is guided by such principles as the reaffirmation of the cultural identity of Black communities; the defence of the ancestral territories of Black communities and sustainable use of their natural resources; the autonomous participation of Black communities and their organisations in decision-making processes that affect them; and the defence of an approach to development that aligns with the cultural aspirations of Black communities and is culturally and environmentally sustainable.
