From 6-10 September 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa, APC member Women’sNet will host a southern Africa-wide workshop to build awareness of and demonstrate the potential use of free and open source software (FOSS) in the non-profit sector, and women’s organisations specifically.
The workshop’s two overall objectives are to stimulate awareness and adoption of FOSS solutions among women’s organisations in the region, and deepen understanding and skills among women technicians in providing technical support to women’s organisations in the assessment, adoption and use of FOSS applications. The workshop will be the first activity held in the soon to be completed FOSS-driven Women’sNet internet cafe.
Writes Karen Banks, APC Networking and Advocacy Coordinator from Johannesburg: "Twenty-three women from Southern Africa, plus APC-Africa-Women members from Nigeria and Kenya are participating in two tracks.
The first track is focussing on installation and configuration of linux and debian, basics of network building, cable-making and “crimping”.
Track 2 is more for decision-makers and content people, who are focussing on different elements of technology planning.
Together, the two tracks will combine to work on a collaborative project to develop a technology strategy plan for a hypothetical organisation.
