Freedom of expression is an enabler of many other rights. World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) on 3 May will revolve around this key theme in 2023. This year marks the 30th anniversary of WPFD and is a turning point to recentre press freedom and independent, pluralistic and diverse media as necessary to the enjoyment of all other human rights. Celebrations of this day will take place at the UN headquarters, where World Press Freedom Day was originally proclaimed.
We are helping to organise a joint side event called “Freedom of Expression and Gender Justice”, where four international freedom of expression rapporteurs – from the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the African Commission of Human Rights, and the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights – will discuss the recommendations of the 2022 Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and Gender Justice alongside the Agreed Conclusions of the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) from last month. Organised by APC, the UN Population Fund, UN Women and the Global Partnership for Action on Gender-Based Online Harassment and Abuse, the event will be accessible online and in person.
We will also have specific recommendations on how to counter online gender-based violence as it intersects with freedom of expression. Following APC's campaign for International Women’s Day in 2022, we will also have lightning talks with partners working on gendered disinformation to address how disinformation particularly hurts women and gender-diverse people and how to counter this trend.
