Community networks in Kenya are very specially invited to join and participate in the call for a fellowship programme on Community-Centric Approaches to Planning, Design and Deployment of Fibre Infrastructure. The application deadline is 30 September 2024.
The call, launched by Association for Progressive Communications (APC), Rhizomatica and Tanda Community Network, in partnership with the African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute (AFRALTI), offers full sponsorship for the participation of members of community-centred access networks in Kenya for capacity building on the fibre optic alternative for their connectivity.
Community networks are rapidly expanding in Kenya, addressing gaps in underserved communities, such as lack of connectivity, unaffordable access, lack of locally relevant content, and insufficient community engagement and integration of local cultural norms. For their connectivity, most of these communities utilise Wi-Fi spectrum bands like licence-exempt 2.4/5 GHz, due to their low cost and availability.
However, this Wi-Fi technology faces challenges like signal interference, congestion and reduced reliability, especially in densely populated areas, struggling with scalability and requiring frequent maintenance. In contrast, fibre optic networks offer superior data capacity, stability, reliability and scalability, making them an advantageous alternative for community networks serving unserved and underserved areas.
The programme proposed is focused on the very specific needs and challenges of community networks, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. It will comprise three phases, involving:
- An intensive foundational training course on fibre deployment, industry standards and field visits to learn how to effectively plan, deploy and manage fibre optic networks in community contexts.
- An industry practicum with technology companies and internet service providers to gain practical insights on real-world applications of fibre optic network installation, maintenance and management.
- Expert mentorship and guidance to develop a technical feasibility study, which will serve as a roadmap for resource mobilisation towards their own fibre deployment projects.
The first phase of intensive training will be offered at AFRALTI in Nairobi, Kenya from 6 to 12 October 2024, covering both theoretical knowledge and hands-on activities, and concluding with a final test by the Fibre Optic Association (FOA).
The fellowship is a fully funded programme, and those selected to participate will receive comprehensive support, including course fees, travel expenses to and from the programme venue, accommodation and meals. Female participants are particularly encouraged to apply, to promote their engagement in community-centred access projects and deployments.
